Suffering and the Flow of Reality: Why Life’s Ups and Downs Are Natural

One of the deepest reasons we suffer is because we resist what is. Life moves according to its own natural rhythm—sometimes up, sometimes down. But our mind believes life should move only upward, only positive, only in ways that match our expectations.
This gap between reality and what we want creates suffering.
Reality Has Its Own Way
Things in life happen the way they naturally happen:
- people behave according to their nature
- situations unfold in their own timing
- work brings challenges and opportunities
- relationships evolve
- health changes
- emotions rise and fall
This is the natural movement of life.
But we want everything to follow our plan:
- always smooth
- always successful
- always comfortable
- always respectful
- always easy
That is not realistic, and it is not natural.
When we expect life to be only “good,” we set ourselves up for disappointment. When something goes wrong at work, when someone criticizes us, or when plans change suddenly, the event itself is neutral. But our opposition to the event creates suffering.
Resistance Creates Suffering
Two things happen:
- Reality does what it does.
- Our mind says: “It should not be like this.”
That conflict is suffering.
It’s not the situation that hurts us—it’s the internal resistance:
- “Why did this happen?”
- “This shouldn’t be happening to me.”
- “Things were going well—why now?”
- “This is unfair.”
When we argue with reality, we lose peace.
Life Moves in Waves, Not Straight Lines
Just like nature has seasons, our life also has seasons:
- times of growth
- times of stillness
- times of confusion
- times of success
- times of difficulty
This is unavoidable.
Everything in nature moves in cycles:
- tides rise and fall
- the moon waxes and wanes
- trees bloom and shed leaves
- weather shifts
- emotions move
- opportunities come and go
We suffer because we want only the rise, never the fall.
But down times are not failures. They are part of the cycle.
When Things Go Down, We Don’t Give Up — We Back Up
A downward phase is not a sign to quit.
It is a sign to:
- pause
- step back
- breathe
- gather strength
- adjust direction
- learn
Backing up is not weakness.
Backing up is wisdom.
Like reversing your car when the road becomes narrow—you are not giving up on the journey, you are simply creating space to move correctly.
Every Event Can Be a Teacher
When we stop resisting reality, we start learning from it.
- Criticism can sharpen our skills.
- Mistakes can improve our clarity.
- Unexpected changes can build resilience.
- Difficult people can teach patience.
- Challenges can strengthen the mind.
Instead of taking everything personally, we begin to take everything as information.
Acceptance Brings Freedom
Acceptance does not mean we like everything.
Acceptance means we stop fighting the present moment.
When we say:
“This is what’s happening right now. Let me respond with clarity.”
—suffering reduces.
We can still work to improve, correct, and grow, but we do it without resisting the moment itself.
Conclusion
Life is not meant to go only upward.
It moves naturally—up and down, light and dark, easy and difficult.
We are happy when we accept this rhythm and stop trying to force life to match our imagination.
Remember:
It is not life’s events that cause suffering, but our resistance to them.
When things go down, don’t give up—just back up and begin again.
Every moment, whether joyful or difficult, becomes part of our path toward wisdom, peace, and growth.
